Terrell, Eagles take down Sanger to win series

Jaxon Terrell found out he would be getting the ball shortly before the start of the third and deciding game Saturday. Once on the mound, the Decatur senior proved unflappable. Pitching out of numerous jams and scattering 11 hits over seven innings, Terrell kept Sanger from putting together a big inning in the 7-3 victory to clinch the 4A Region II quarterfinal series at Argyle.

Hicks, Eagles stay alive in series

Facing elimination Friday night, the Decatur Eagles once again put the ball in the hands of Wilson Hicks. The sophomore lefty helped the Eagles survive for a third time in two seasons with the season on the line. Hicks battled through a rough start to shut Sanger out over his final three frames as the patient and creative Decatur offense pushed ahead in the 6-3 victory in game two of the 4A Region II quarterfinal series.

Lightning stops game one with Decatur down 3-1

Down to their final three outs Thursday night, Mother Nature gave the Decatur Eagles a break of 20-plus hours to come up with a plan to score a pair of runs and avoid a loss in game one of the Class 4A Region II quarterfinals. Sanger owned a 3-1 lead in top of the seventh and had a runner on first with no outs, when lightning brought a halt to the action. The game will resume at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Argyle with game two following. A third game, if necessary, is tentatively slated for noon Saturday.

Brooke Irion recalls Bridgeport coach Alan Green telling her during her freshman year that she would shoot a round under par in high school. In her last high school round, the Bridgeport senior brought his prediction to fruition on the state’s biggest stage. Irion fired a 1-under 71 Tuesday in the second round of the Class 4A tournament at the University Interscholastic League golf championships at Slick Rock Golf Course at Horseshoe Bay in Marble Falls.

Decatur’s Garner announces retirement

Playing gritty defense under the direction of coach Billy Garner over the past 12 seasons, the Decatur Lady Eagles captured five district titles and made five trips to the region quarterfinals. Garner’s teams won 236 games and made the postseason in 10 of his dozen years at the helm. The longtime coach is now retiring.

Elder’s save clinches series for Eagles

In the top of the sixth inning Saturday, Decatur coach Brian Tickell walked down to check on Bryce Elder warming in the bullpen. Coming off back-to-back no-hitters, the senior ace told his coach to put him into the one-run game. Tickell complied, and Elder mowed down the only Melissa hitter he faced in the sixth on three pitches. Featuring an electric fastball, Elder struck out the first two batters in the seventh before getting a weak groundball to second to end Decatur’s 4-3 victory in the 4A Region II area-round, series-clinching third game at Argyle.
