DECATUR TO KEEP MASK REQUIREMENTS AT UPPER LEVELS — After a lengthy and often passionate discussion Monday night, the Decatur School Board voted 4-3 in favor of Superintendent Joseph Coburn’s recommendation to keep most of the face mask requirements at the high school, middle school and DAEP campuses, with a few exceptions. At the elementary level, masks would be required for staff in public areas but optional for staff in the classroom. Students in fourth and fifth grade who are currently required to wear masks would be encouraged but not required to maintain the practice. Much of the board discussion on the mask issue also centered on the rules for quarantining, which was not up for action at the meeting. The board will meet again March 22 to reconsider the issue after consultation with local health authorities.
