AgriLife Extension Agent Tanya Davis

AgriLife Extension Agent Tanya Davis is officially retiring after 23 years of serving Wise County youth and adults. Messenger reporter Amy Neal visited with Davis as she starts her final week on the job.

Q: How did you get started in Extension?

A: “I started here in July 1981 and worked as an assistant 4-H agent for four and half years.”

Q: What will you miss the most about your job?

A: “I would say that I am going to miss the 4-H program, but I am going to jump right back in as a volunteer. I am really going to miss the partnerships and the teamwork because I love being a part of a team. I love to surround myself with better organizers and better teachers. I like to sit back and watch things happen, so I am going to miss being a part of the county, district, and state Extension staff. I will miss that camaraderie.”

Q: What are you looking forward to as you enter retirement?

A: “I am looking forward to spending more time with the grandkids. My oldest granddaughter always smiles as she ask me how many more days until I retire. I am excited for a new chapter, but I am not looking for a full-time chapter because the very best job is sitting right here.”

Q: Where is your favorite place or business in Wise County?

A: “There is not a lot of places that I don’t like to spend time in Wise County. It is a great place to work and live. I have spent a lot of time at Casa Torres but there are great places to eat all around the county. I also love my church. I go to Grace Fellowship.”

Q: What do you think makes Wise County unique?

A: “Our ability to come together and support each other. There has been so many times that I got to be a part of something that made a tremendous impact in the county. In 2006, my coworker came in from commissioners court and told me that we needed to do something about the firefighters that did not have what they needed to fight fires in a drought. He made a phone call or two and within 24 hours we had organized a firefighter benefit. Within a couple months, we had our benefit at the conference center and raised close to $100,000. We were just a small part and there was so many people involved. We have also done it at the youth fair where we all came together and made an impact on the kids of Wise County. Everyone puts all things aside and works together.”
