Around 105 pounds of crystal methamphetamine were seized by the Wise County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) after a traffic stop on U.S. 81/287 in late November, the sheriff’s office announced Monday.

On Nov. 24, deputies with the WCSO Specialized Enforcement Division stopped a commercial vehicle traveling along U.S. 81/287 north of Alvord, according to a press release. Deputies obtained consent from the driver to search the truck, and during the search, found more than 100 pounds of methamphetamine concealed inside the cab of the vehicle.

The sole occupant of the vehicle, Buenaventura Rivera-Villafuerte of Mexico, was arrested. After the discovery, the Drug Enforcement Administration was notified and took over the investigation, according to the release.

Federal arrest records show that Rivera-Villafuerte is facing the charge of possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of crystal methamphetamine.

The sheriff’s office press release said it “remains committed to combating the trafficking of illegal narcotics and ensuring the safety of residents throughout Wise County and beyond.”

It’s the second major drug bust in a little over a month for the WCSO.

On Oct. 16, the WCSO Specialized Enforcement Division seized nearly 20,000 pounds of marijuana and related products following a traffic stop near Alvord.

The estimated street value of the drugs is more than $50 million.

That seizure was believed to be the largest marijuana drug bust ever by the WCSO, according to Chief Deputy Eric Debus.
