Warner joins Boyd staff as offensive coordinator

Boyd native Scott Warner is no stranger to football fields across the Metroplex, having served as an offensive line coach for the past 13 seasons.

Now the coach is returning to where he fell in love with the game.

Boyd athletic director Ian Ritchey announced the hiring of Warner as the Yellowjackets’ new offensive coordinator.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity at Boyd,” Warner said. “It brings a lot of new with it. I’m ready to help install the offense, working with the kids and getting the season started.

“This was a great move for my career,” he said. “As far as the job goes, being able to call plays and install an entire offense will be something new for me. I’m looking forward to this challenge.”

Warner coached the offensive line at Decatur for nine seasons. He also coached at Gainesville for four years.

The new coach plans to mix his ideas with the Yellowjackets’ current offensive game plan.

“I’m really hoping to bring in some new things but tie it together with things they’ve already been doing here,” Warner said. “It’ll be a spread offense, but my goal is to keep it simple for the kids. After working with them for a few days, it seems like they’re excited and willing to learn. I think it’s going to be a good fit.

“We want to score as much as we can,” he said. “With the new offense, I want it to be easy for them and not put too much on their plate. There will be a little adjustment because the kids play on both sides of the ball at Boyd, but our overall goal is to have the most points on the scoreboard.”

Warner will serve as the team’s assistant head coach under Ritchey — Decatur’s former defensive coordinator.

“Continuing to work with Coach Ritchey is something I’m really looking forward to,” Warner said. “When he presented this opportunity to join his staff, it’s just something that felt right. We played together in high school and ended up going our separate ways in college.

Both of us ended up in the coaching world and were on opposite sides of the ball for the past four years at Decatur.

“Ever since high school, it’s really like we’ve never missed a beat,” he continued. “We have a good friendship, but we also have a working relationship together. We’re both in the business of winning football games, building relationships and making kids better. I know he’s really focused on those aspects, and I want to be a part of that.”

Ritchey was named Boyd athletic director in June. When looking for an offensive leader, he knew Warner was the man for the job.

“This hire was huge for me and for our staff and kids here at Boyd,” Ritchey said. “I’ve known Scott for a long time. He did a phenomenal job at Decatur. I know the coach and man that he is. He wants the best for his athletes. He’s definitely a coach we wanted not just for his knowledge of the game, but for the way he works to make players better. We want those kind of coaches here at Boyd.”

Warner will also coach on the same staff as his wife Erica, the Lady Jackets’ basketball coach for six seasons.

“Having the chance to work in the same athletic department as my wife is 100 percent a God thing,” Warner said. “She’s my favorite coach on the staff. We’re excited about coaching together. Boyd is a school district we can see keeping our kids in for their entire educational careers. Erica and I both grew up in Boyd and graduated from here. If I can keep my kids here and we both work here at the same time, that’s what I really want for them.”

He has also been tapped as the new leader of Boyd’s powerlifting program — a role he previously filled at Decatur.

“I want to get as many kids involved with the powerlifting program as we can,” Warner said. “My goal is to show them that they are stronger than they think they are, and they can get out there and compete. Powerlifting helps to build athletes so they can be successful in their other sports. They’ll get stronger every day and even surprise themselves with seeing how much better they can be.”

A 2003 graduate of Boyd, Warner played for Wise County legendary coach J.G. Cartwright.

“I was a tight end and defensive end in high school,” Warner said. “My time as a Yellowjacket really helped to make me into the coach I am today. I have the utmost respect for Coach Cartwright and the staff he had. There are some guys on staff right now that were coaches when I was here. I’m looking forward to being with these guys and making a contribution to the Boyd athletic department.”

The Yellowjackets will begin football practices Monday. Boyd opens the season at home against Van Alstyne Aug. 27.
