SPRINGER, LUTHER HEADED TO RUNOFF – Drew Springer and Shelley Luther are headed for a runoff election in the Senate District 30 race. None of the six candidates in the special election received more than 50 percent of the vote, so the top two finishers will advance to the runoff, most likely in December. Springer was the leading vote getter, by a slim margin, with 31.8 percent of the vote to Luther’s 31.7 percent. Jacob Minter, at 21 percent, was the only other candidate to receive more than 10 percent of the vote. In Wise County, Luther was the top choice by a vote of 35.82 to 32.76 percent over Springer. Minter, the lone Democrat in the race, received 13.35 percent of the votes in Wise County. Other Wise County results included Andy Hopper at 7.8 percent; Craig Carter with 6.1 percent; and Chris Watts at 4.15 percent.

SLIGHT DIP IN ACTIVE CASES – Wise County’s active case count remained under 20 for the last seven days, according to data reported Tuesday on the county’s online dashboard, wcmess.com/covidtesting. There were 15 active cases Monday, and Wise County Emergency Management Coordinator Cody Powell said the active case count averaged 17 in the last week. “The downward motion is still slow, and it hasn’t been far enough under 20 for long enough to consider lifting the mask order yet,” he said. In the last seven days, there were 19 new COVID-19 cases confirmed in Wise County and 21 recoveries. Read more in the midweek Wise County Messenger on newsstands today and online at wcmessenger.com.
