CHRISTIAN HIRED AS BOYD ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL — The Boyd School Board Monday hired Melonie Christian to serve as the next principal at Boyd Elementary School. Her official start date is July 1. “I am excited and honored to be named principal at Boyd Elementary School,” Christian said, in a press release posted to the district’s website Monday night. “I look forward to serving the students, staff and families that make up this great community. Through collaboration with our families and staff, we will promote a love for learning and a culture that is based on what is best for our students to reach their potential.” Christian retired in 2017 after a 29-year career in education, spending her last nine years as the principal of Rann Elementary School in Decatur. She started her career as a kindergarten teacher at Boyd in 1990. She currently serves on the Decatur School Board and was renamed as the board’s vice president Monday. CITY RECOGNIZES POLICE WEEK — Decatur Mayor Mike McQuiston issued a proclamation at Monday’s city council meeting to recognize Peace Officers Memorial Day (May 15) and National Police Week (May 14-20) in Decatur. In other business, incumbent council members Jake Hayes, Will Carpenter and Mayor Pro Tem Melinda Reeves were sworn in.

EIGHTER FROM DECATUR — The Eighter from Decatur Food Truck Challenge is Saturday at the Wise County Fairgrounds. The challenge will feature more than 20 food trucks from all over Texas, and a free concert by Casey Donahew and Chris Colston. The food truck competition is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the full menu will be served from 2 p.m. until the trucks sell out. No outside food or drinks are permitted. Parking is $10 per vehicle from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and $20 from 4-10 p.m.

GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY MEETING — The Wise County Genealogical Society meets 5:30 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Decatur. The group will celebrate its 10-year anniversary.

SEMI-CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION ­­­— The city of New Fairview is turning 50 and invites the community to join the celebration. The event will take place on Saturday at 999 Illinois Lane, New Fairview, starting at 6 p.m. There will be food, music, games and more.

COLLEGE REGISTRATION — Registration is now open to all new students at Weatherford College Wise County. If you are a first time college student, haven’t attended college in the past five years or are a dual credit senior graduating in May, you must register for CORE orientation. FATHER-SON ADVENTURE — Bridgeport Parks and Recreation is hosting a Father-Son Outdoor Adventure 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the Bridgeport Community Center and Ball Fields at 1102 Lawdwin Avenue. There will be laser tag, putt-putt golf, a mechanical bull, a toddler area, games, hot dogs, s’mores and more. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased at bridgeport.recdesk.com. PLAYOFF BASEBALL — Alvord (23-7) will battle No. 22 Windthorst in a 2A third-round series at Bowie High School. Game 1 is today at 5:30, followed by Game 2 5:30 p.m. Thursday. A tiebreaker is slated for 5:30 p.m. Friday, if necessary.

FUNERAL for Jessie G. Renteria, 77, of Decatur is 11 a.m. Saturday at Edwards Funeral Home in Ranger with interment to follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Ranger. Family visitation is 5-7 p.m. Friday with rosary said at 6 at the funeral home.

FUNERAL for Eddie “Big-C” Carter, 77, formerly of Wise County is 9 a.m. Thursday at Metrocrest Funeral Home in Carrollton with burial at DFW National Cemetery. Family visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

MEMORIAL for Franklin Cobb Lasater Jr., 73, formerly of Decatur is 1 p.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Methodist Church.

SERVICE for Mark Livingston Hooper, 75, is 1 p.m. Saturday at Crossroads Church in Decatur.
