CHICO FORFEITS PLAYOFF GAME – The Chico Dragons will not take the field for their bi-district game against the No. 6 Albany Lions Thursday at Graham High School. Chico coach Randy Miller confirmed to the Messenger Monday that the Dragons will forfeit the game due to a high number of COVID-19 cases affecting his team’s players and coaches. “We don’t really have a choice,” Miller said about canceling the contest. “We’ve been hit really hard by COVID-19. Myself and four other coaches are our right now due to either confirmed cases or having to quarantine. We just don’t have enough players to be able to play the game.” The forfeiture drops Chico to 1-8 overall. The team finished fourth in District 7-2A Division II with a 1-3 record after defeating Era in Week 8, 33-8.

MAYOR RECEPTION – The city of Decatur will host a reception for outgoing Decatur Mayor Martin Woodruff 2-4 p.m. today at the Decatur Conference Center. The event will be come and go. Woodruff has served on the council for a total of 15 and a half years. All attendees will be asked to wear a mask for the safety of those present. There will be a limited number of people allowed in the Great Hall at the conference center.

VETERANS DAY SERVICE – The Wise County Veterans Group will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony along with a remembrance service for Col. Robert C. Johnson beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wise County Veterans Memorial Park in Decatur. Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin and Wise County Judge J.D. Clark are expected to speak.

BI-DISTRICT FOOTBALL GAMES SCHEDULED – The Decatur Eagles (5-5, 4-1) will take on the Pampa Harvesters in the first round of the playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday at Snyder High School’s Tiger Stadium. The Boyd Yellowjackets (8-2, 4-2) will battle the Wall Hawks at 7 p.m. Thursday at Dublin High School’s Bob and Norma Cervetto Field. The Paradise Panthers (7-3, 4-3) will face the No. 6 Jim Ned Indians at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Dublin High School. The Alvord Bulldogs (5-4, 4-1) will square off against the Como-Pickton Eagles at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Anna High School’s Coyote Stadium.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS – The No. 4 Decatur Lady Eagles (28-1) will battle against the No. 3 Hereford Lady Whitefaces in the 4A Region I semifinals tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Childress High School. The Boyd Lady Jackets (27-4, 13-1) will take on the No. 8 Harmony Lady Eagles in the 3A Region II semifinals at 7:30 p.m. at Lucas Lovejoy High School.

GIRLS BASKETBALL – The Boyd Lady Jackets open their season on the road against Bellevue at 6 p.m. The Alvord Lady Bulldogs start a new campaign against the Paradise Lady Panthers (0-1) at 6:15 p.m. at Paradise High School. The Chico Lady Dragons will begin their season with a home game against Olney at 6 p.m. The Slidell Lady Hounds (0-1) will host S&S at 4 p.m.

OFFICES CLOSED FOR VETERANS DAY – All Wise County administration offices will be closed Wednesday in observance of Veterans Day.

DUMP SITES CLOSED WEDNESDAY – Wise County Public Works and all of the county dump sites will be closed on Veterans Day Wednesday. They will reopen regular hours on the next business day.

IMMUNIZATION CLINIC – The Texas Health Department will conduct an immunization clinic at First Baptist Church Decatur today. They will be available 10-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Walk-in’s will be accepted, but you can call them at 940-665-9315, option 5, to make an appointment.

DIABETES SCREENINGS – The Total Diabetes Care Clinic Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists Dick Gilley and Brenda Haile will provide free A1c screenings 11 a.m.-3 p.m. today. The drive-thru screenings will be performed via fingerstick with results in six minutes. The screenings will take place at Wise Health Clinics in Boyd, 133 FM 730 No. 106.
