Wise County Messenger

Update for Tuesday, June 28, 2022

FIREWORKS DEPENDENT ON WEATHER — Wise County Fire Marshal Jeff Doughty said the county couldn’t prevent the sale of fireworks for the Fourth of July, but could prohibit the lighting of fireworks if the county’s burn ban is activated over the holiday weekend. The county is under weather-activated burn ban, which prohibits burning on elevated or high-risk and Red Flag days, as designated by the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth. Doughty said fireworks are prohibited from being lit on those high-risk days. “Anything with a spark or flame is prohibited on Red Flag days,” Doughty said. He will be posting on the fire marshal’s social media and updating the hotline if burning is allowed for the day shortly after the National Weather Service releases its forecast early in the morning. With the drying conditions and hot temperatures, Doughty urged those planning to use fireworks on the holiday to take precautions — mow tall grass and water vegetation.
