DANGEROUS INTERSECTION COULD GET NEW SIGNS — An intersection in Bridgeport which has been the site of numerous wrecks over the years, including a fatal wreck last month, could soon get new stop signs. Bridgeport Police Chief Steve Stanford said he is working with the Texas Department of Transportation to have LED stop signs installed at the intersection of U.S. 380 and Farm Road 1658 west of town. Stanford said wrecks often occur when drivers run the stop sign while traveling south on FM 1658. The latest injury wreck at the intersection was Monday, Stanford said.
STORMS LIKELY — You might want to keep an umbrella close today. The forecast includes a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with the highest chances this afternoon. Otherwise it will be mostly cloudy with a high near 86 and an overnight low of 71. Overnight rainfall totals included 0.15 of an inch in Alvord and 0.13 in Decatur.
CITY HALL TO REOPEN — Decatur City Hall will reopen today after being closed Wednesday. A lightning strike during Tuesday’s storms caused a power outage and damage that required repairs.
LABOR DAY SAND CASTLE COMPETITION — Wise County Park in Chico will host a sand castle competition, with child and adult builders invited to come up with the best sand-based creations. Prizes have been donated for the competition and they include $100, two nights camping for one RV or two tents, as well as door prizes that will be given out from a drawing. The competition is free, and an awning will be set up to register contestants at the sandbar. Building can begin as early as 6 a.m. (the registration area will be set up later than 6 a.m.), and judging begins at 3 p.m.
GOVERNMENT OFFICES CLOSED MONDAY — Most government offices will be closed Monday for the Labor Day holiday.
ALVORD WATERMELON FESTIVAL — The Alvord Watermelon Festival and BBQ Cookoff is fast-approaching. This year’s event at Elm Creek Park is Sept. 9-10.
