PILOT KILLED IN PLANE CRASH — One person was killed when a plane crashed just south of Decatur Friday afternoon. The crash happened off County Road 4127 less than a mile from U.S. 81/287 just after 3 p.m. Decatur City Manager Nate Mara said a twin engine plane crashed, killing a single occupant. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane was a twin-engine Cessna 421C, and the pilot was the only person on board. The plane departed from Denton Enterprise Airport in Denton. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. They did not release the identity of the pilot. Wise County EMS, Decatur Fire Department, Wise County Sheriff’s Office, Decatur Police Department and Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the scene. First responders arrived to find the plane on fire, and the flames were quickly extinguished as they worked to free the pilot from the wreckage.

FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RESULTS – Decatur (9-3) claimed a 4A Division I area title with a 42-15 win over Andrews Friday at Clyde High School’s Bulldog Stadium. The Eagles will advance to the regional quarterfinals against Canyon Randall 1 p.m. Friday at Abilene Christian University’s Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium. Paradise (10-2) pulled off a 17-14 upset against No. 5 Shallowater in a 3AI second-round matchup Friday at Wolf Stadium in Colorado City. The Panthers will rematch against District 4-3AI rival Whitesboro in the third round 2 p.m. Friday at Prosper ISD’s Children’s Health Stadium.

PATRIOTS FALL IN CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH — Despite a 32-6 lead in the first quarter, the Victory Christian Academy Patriots (9-3) ended their season with a 50-32 loss to Heritage Christian Academy in the TCAF Division II state championship game Saturday at Lake Country Christian School in Fort Worth.

BOYD PRINCIPAL RESIGNATION — At Thursday’s Boyd School Board meeting, Interim Superintendent Leslie Vann announced longtime administrator Daniel Bourgeois has resigned, effective June 1. Bourgeois, who currently serves as high school principal, has been with the district since 2006 and served as a middle school teacher, coach and administrator at the district’s three campuses. According to Boyd City Administrator Dewayne Taylor, Bourgeois will become the city’s next assistant administrator, and will also take on the role of city secretary June 1.

GIRLS BASKETBALL SCHEDULE — Decatur will travel to Mineral Wells today at 2:30 p.m. Bridgeport is at Melissa at 12:30 p.m. Paradise will host Cisco at 11 a.m. Slidell will take on Alvord in a Wise County battle 11:30 a.m. at Alvord High School. Chico heads to Wichita Christian at 2 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL — Decatur will head to Nevada Community today at 3:30 p.m. Bridgeport hosts Gainesville at 1:30 p.m. Boyd welcomes Millsap at 6:30 p.m. Chico is at Wichita Christian at 1:30 p.m. Slidell travels to Era at 6 p.m.

WARMING UP — After several days of below-normal temperatures, we’ll see a warming trend this week with highs in the upper-50s to lower-60s forecast each day. We could see patchy fog Tuesday morning. Rainfall totals from the weekend included 0.07 of an inch in Bridgeport and 0.03 in Decatur.

MEMORIAL FUND — Donations to the Maycie South Memorial Fund may be made at any First Financial Bank location. South, 13, of Chico died in an ATV accident last week, and donations will go to the family to help with expenses.

TURKEY TROT — The Wise County Turkey Trot returns to the Decatur Town Square Thanksgiving morning. Proceeds from the 5K/1-mile race benefit Raquel’s Wings for Life, the local nonprofit that offers free transportation to cancer patients for treatment. The mile race begins at 8 a.m. The 5K race will follow at 8:30 a.m. The starting line will be on Main Street in Decatur. Participants are welcome to run, walk or trot.
