FATALITY WRECK — A Boyd man died at a local hospital after being injured in a single-vehicle wreck near Paradise Saturday. Jason W. Bishop, 42, of Boyd, was transported to Wise Health System in Decatur, where he was pronounced dead. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the wreck occurred at about 10:07 p.m. in the 300 block of County Road 3385. The preliminary investigation indicate Bishop’s 2011 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling south at an unsafe speed. “The Chevrolet failed to negotiate a curve in the road and left the roadway, striking a fence and a tree,” said DPS spokesman Sgt. Ricky Hunter. 

MAN ARRESTED AFTER PURSUIT — An Austin man was arrested after a prolonged chase and two standoffs with officers Sunday morning. John Cerda, 31, was arrested and charged with a first degree felony charge of possession of controlled substance  penalty group 2, third degree felony charges of tampering with evidence and evading arrest and a state jail felony charge of possession of marijuana less than 5 pounds. The incident began when a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Cerda’s 2020 Chevrolet Malibu at about 7:30 a.m. on U.S. 81/271 south at the intersection of County Road 4421, south of Decatur. During the initial chase, Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said the suspect threw two duffle bags out of the window of the vehicle. According to Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Ricky Hunter, the bags were recovered and were found to contain illegal narcotics. Cerda initiated a standoff situation with local agencies at County Road 3848 for about an hour. Following the standoff, Cerda fled again and continued traveling south into Tarrant County. The pursuit stopped again at the intersection of U.S. 81/287 and Blue Mound Road about 25 minutes later. The Fort Worth Police Department’s SWAT team, Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office, DPS and WCSO were involved in a second standoff with Cerda that lasted about two hours before he was taken into custody. According to Akin, Cerda was placed into custody by DPS troopers around 11 a.m. and was transported and booked into the Wise County Jail, where he remained as of Sunday night.

ONE HURT IN SATURDAY WRECK — A Sanger man was taken to a local hospital Saturday morning after a one-vehicle wreck involving a cement truck near Decatur. Jose Puga, 50, was transported to Medical City Denton in stable condition. According to Decatur Police Chief Delvon Campbell, a 1999 Mack cement truck belonging to JP Ready Mix of Sanger was traveling westbound in 1800 block of U.S. 380 around 7:30 a.m. “The vehicle had a blowout on the front of the truck, which caused the [truck] to flip and come to rest in the median,” Campbell said.

NEW FAIRVIEW COUNCIL CONSIDERS DISANNEXATION ELECTION — The New Fairview City Council will consider a resolution calling a November election for the disannexation of the Falcon Ridge Estates subdivision in Denton County during its meeting at 7 tonight. The council will also consider a resolution for park improvements and hold a discussion on the creation of an Emergency Service District for fire and EMS in Denton County.

BRIDGEPORT COUNCIL — The Bridgeport City Council will consider an application for a Texas Community Development Block Grant for $750,000 to purchase a Fire, Ambulance and Service Truck during its meeting at 5 tonight.

BURNING PROHIBITED — With an elevated fire risk today due to high temperatures and low humidity, outdoor burning is prohibited. 

EXCESSIVE HEAT CONTINUES — An excessive heat warning is in effect through 9 p.m. Tuesday for Wise County and all of North Central Texas. High temperatures will soar to around 108 under bright sunny skies. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Lows tonight will only dip into the low 80s.
