WRECK VICTIM DIES — A man was struck and killed while walking across Texas 114 west of Rhome Thursday morning. Rhome Police Chief Eric Debus confirmed that a pedestrian was killed near the west city limits of Rhome around 6:30 a.m. “The pedestrian was attempting to cross the highway when he was struck by at least two vehicles and pronounced dead at the scene,” he said. The man was identified as 22-year-old Andrew Pawlak, who is from Colorado but was working in Boyd, Debus said Thursday afternoon following notification of next of kin.

LIBRARY TEMPORARILY CLOSED — The Decatur Public Library announced Thursday that it would be temporarily closed. The closure is due to staffing shortages caused by illnesses among staff. “They reached a point where enough staff wasn’t feeling well and we couldn’t responsibly staff all the necessary positions effectively,” said Decatur City Manager Nate Mara. The library announced that programs and other events are canceled for the time being. The library will post more information on reopening on its website and social media platforms.

BASKETBALL RESULTS — The 1A No. 4 Slidell Lady Hounds claimed a 62-13 District 22-A win over Forestburg Thursday. In the nightcap, the 15th-ranked Slidell Hounds defeated the Longhorns, 86-14.

WISE COUNTY TAX PREPARATION — Anyone with a lower income can get free help filing taxes. Volunteers from AARP will be at the Decatur Public Library, 1700 FM 51 South, on Mondays. Appointments are needed. Call 940-393-0290 or visit decaturpubliclibrary.com

DECATUR CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY — The Decatur Police Department will host a Citizen Police Academy beginning Feb. 21. SWIMMING — Swimmers from Boyd and Decatur will compete at the 4A Region I championships today and Saturday at Andrews ISD Performing Arts Carter and Natatorium.

BRIDGEPORT FFA — Bridgeport FFA will host its annual Night Out With Bridgeport FFA at the Runaway Bay Golf Course ballroom Saturday. Student-built projects will be on display and can be purchased, with proceeds going toward the organization. Meal tickets can be purchased with the QR code on the Bridgeport FFA Facebook page.

BOYS BASKETBALL — Decatur looks to close out the first round of District 8-4A at Springtown tonight at 7:30. Bridgeport welcomes Castleberry at 7:30 p.m. In 10-3A, Boyd is at Whitesboro, while Paradise hosts Callisburg. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Alvord is on the road for a 13-2A showdown at Lindsay at 7:30 p.m. Chico takes on Era 8 p.m. at Chico High School. Slidell will travel to Prairie Valley in 22-A action at 7:30 p.m. VCA seeks its seventh league win at home against Heritage Christian Academy at 7 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL — Bridgeport seeks its sixth District 8-4A victory at home against Castleberry tonight at 6:15. Decatur looks to climb above .500 in league play in a road battle against Springtown at 6:15 p.m. Boyd battles in a 10-3A contest against at Whitesboro at 6 p.m. Paradise will face Callisburg at home at 6 p.m. In 13-2A, Alvord hosts Lindsay at 6:30 p.m., while Chico squares off against Era at Chico High School. Slidell eyes its 10th league win at Prairie Valley at 6 p.m. VCA will welcome Heritage Christian Academy at 6 p.m.

SOCCER — The Bridgeport Sissies will host Mineral Wells tonight at 7:15 p.m. In boys soccer, Bridgeport welcomes the Rams at 5:30, p.m., while Decatur travels to Gainesville.
