DISD PROPOSES TAX RATE REDUCTION — Decatur ISD is proposing a five-cent decrease in its tax rate. On Thursday, the school board proposed a maintenance and operations tax rate of 85.46 cents per $100 of taxable value, a 5.74 cent reduction from last year. The M&O tax rate funds salaries and other operating expenses. The district is proposing to keep its interest and sinking rate at 23.37 cents per $100 of taxable value. The I&S tax rate is used to pay off debt. Chief Financial Officer Cindy Tatum said keeping the I&S at the same rate will allow the district to pay down about $1.7 million more in debt. A public hearing on the tax rate is scheduled for Aug. 29. Read more in the weekend Messenger.
