Snakebitten: Man not shy about calling 911

It’s been a tough year for one man who in the last two months allegedly tumbled down a cliff in Fort Worth, fell off a bridge in Wise County and was most recently bitten twice by a rattlesnake in Jacksboro.

Emergency responders arrived at a home in Jacksboro Sunday and found 25-year-old Jeffrey Curry, of Fort Worth, with snake bites to his right leg and left hand.

“The poor guy, he got bit on the leg and then he got bit on the hand,” said Jeremy Clayton, a Jacksboro police officer. “He had two puncture wounds in his hand and in his leg. He was real calm. He walked out of the house and to the ambulance. He was a lot more calm than I would have been if I’d been bitten by a snake.”

After getting bit in the leg, Curry tried to grab the snake and was struck again in the hand.

Clayton said officers searched all over the property but never found a snake.

Curry was transported by helicopter from Jacksboro to Wise Regional Health System in Decatur. Photos taken at the hospital showed the areas around the bites swollen and discolored. He soon walked out of the hospital on his own accord.

The snake bites occurred just two weeks after he’d reportedly fallen off a bridge in Wise County.

On the afternoon of Thursday, Feb. 14, Curry called 911 on his cell phone and reported that he’d fallen off the bridge on U.S. 380 crossing Big Sandy Creek. He told emergency responders he’d fallen approximately 15 feet onto the shallow, rocky creek bed below. Medics found him lying on the ground on his back, complaining of back pain and numbness in his legs. He received a helicopter flight to a Fort Worth hospital and was soon released.

That was the second time in less than a month that Curry reported falling. On Jan. 20, Curry called 911 on his cell phone to report that he’d fallen off a cliff about 8 feet high in a wooded area on the south shore of Lake Worth.

Fort Worth police and firefighters found him lying on his back. He told police he’d been walking his dog when he lost his footing and fell off the ledge. His dog wasn’t at the scene.

Last November, Wise County EMS were called to attend Curry after he complained of chest pains while sitting on a bench.

“He probably needs to stay inside his house,” Clayton said.
