LEADER LEAVING – Superintendent Ryder Warren will retire at the end of this school year. Submitted photo

Northwest ISD Superintendent Ryder Warren is retiring at the end of this school year after five years with the district.

The NISD board of trustrees “reluctantly” accepted his resignation Monday night.

Warren said he appreciated his time at NISD and the opportunity to lead the fast-growing district.

“It will always be a blessing in my life, having retired from here, and I really do appreciate you,” he told the board. “I appreciate your support. I appreciate everything that you’ve done for us and everything you’ve taught me … on how to be a better superintendent.”

Board member Mark Schluter jokingly reminded Warren the board still had to approve the resignation.

“This is the last time I’m going to say this, but I definitely appreciate the last five-and-a-half years that you have been with us,” he said. “We’ve gone through a lot together this Team of Eight, the administrators, our school district, and I can’t say enough about your leadership.”

Warren has been serving NISD since July 2016. He said he knows the district will hire a “phenomenal superintendent to assist the team in taking Northwest ISD to even greater success.”

“But please know I will always be available to support the team, the schools and the district as a whole in the future,” he said.

Board President Anne Davis-Simpson said the board appreciated Warren’s leadership.

The board set a tentative timeline for selecting a new superintendent. They plan to select a search firm at an upcoming meeting, so they can begin interviewing candidates and announce a lone finalist during the second semester.

Northwest ISD will add a section about the superintendent search to its website when more information is released.

In other business Monday night, the board approved the district entering into a contract to purchase 15 acres of land in the Trails of Elizabeth Creek development in Denton County for the new Hatfield Elementary school planned to open in fall of 2023.

As of Monday evening, NISD had 180 positive COVID-19 cases.

“As a comparison, our high point was 504 a few weeks ago,” Warren said. “We can’t say enough about it … I think I said this last time, but the kids are doing a great job, the staff is doing a great job, families are doing a great job. We are handling this challenge.”

NISD has defined close contact as “being directly exposed to infectious secretions or being within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period.”

This definition is generally based on CDC guidelines and was put in place yesterday. For more information on NISD’s COVID-19 protocols, go to nisdtx.org/covid.
