COCK FIGHTING ARRESTS – Five more people have been arrested in connection with a cock fighting ring near Bridgeport that was discovered at the time of a fatal shooting Aug. 25. Armando Pacheco, Pablo Rios Lopez Jr., Martin Aguilar, Gilberto Duran-Cruz and Andres Duran-Cruz were arrested Friday by the Wise County Sheriff’s Office and charged with cock fighting causes or earns and engaging in organized criminal activity, according to Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin. Gabriel Huerta was arrested earlier on the same charges. Officers discovered the cock fighting ring when they responded to a report of a shooting at the location in the 3000 block of Farm Road 920 last month. They found Juan Carlos Cano Chavez dead from a gunshot wound and have issued an arrest warrant for Miguel Aguilar Garcia in connection with the death. Garcia has not been located.

CAPITAL MURDER ARREST – The Wise County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Lake Bridgeport man Friday and charged him with capital murder in the July 5 death of Lake Bridgeport resident Lauren Whitener. Rodney Aric Maxwell, 39, was arrested just before noon Friday on a traffic stop south of Decatur, according to Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin. Maxwell was taken into custody without incident on warrants for capital murder and two counts of arson. Akin said investigators were able to obtain an arrest warrant based on the results of evidence that had been tested at crime labs. The 32-year-old Whitener’s body was found with multiple stab wounds in her bedroom following a fire at the home at 620 N. Main St. during the early morning hours of July 5. The Dallas County Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide and not caused by the fire. The Texas Rangers have been assisting the WCSO on the case. PATRIOT DAY PROGRAM – To commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and honor local first responders, the Wise County Veterans Group will have a Patriot Day program 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wise County Veterans Memorial Park, 405 N. Trinity St., in Decatur. Speaker is former Decatur mayor Joe Lambert. The Decatur Fire Department Honor Guard will also participate in the ceremony. Police, fire and medical personnel from across the county are invited, as well as the general public.

DIABETES CLASSES – Total Diabetes Care at Wise Health System will hold diabetes education classes in Alvord today. The beginner class will be offered at 3 p.m., and the advanced class will be offered at 4 p.m. Both classes will be held at the First Baptist Church. The classes are intended to help those with diabetes better understand and manage the disease. Classes are free and will be taught by Dick Gilley RN, CCRN, CDE. No RSVP required. TOWN HALL MEETING – Decatur ISD will host a town hall meeting 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Central Administration, 307 S. Cates. The public is invited to share their input on what qualities matter most in a superintendent. They will also hear more about the search process, timeline and will have an opportunity to ask questions.

SCV MEETING – The Sons of Confederate Veterans meet 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Wesley Center of the First United Methodist Church of Decatur.

DEMOCRATIC SOCIAL – The Wise County Democratic Party will host their monthly social 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriot in Decatur. Jon Panning is guest speaker. Light snacks will be served. For information visit wisedemocrats.com.

COALITION MEETING – The Wise County Community Coalition meets noon today at Pizza Hut in Decatur. Guest speaker will be Wise County Democratic Chair Janet Amos who will discuss election topics such as voter fraud and voter registration. For information call Mike Bell at 940-799-1077.

REPUBLICAN MEETING – Wise Republican Women and Wise County Republican Party will meet jointly for their regular monthly meeting 6:30 p.m. today at the Wise County Veterans Museum in Bridgeport.

NEW FAIRVIEW PUBLIC HEARING – The New Fairview City Council will hold a public hearing 7 p.m. today at city hall to receive public comments and to discuss the 2019-2020 city budget. The council will also hold its second and final public hearing on the proposed tax rate for the 2019 tax year. The council is expected to take action at the close of the public hearing.
