Meet the 2025 Character Counts Scholarship RecipientsFree Access

This week, eight graduating seniors from Wise County high schools will be rewarded for who they are and how they’ve brightened the world around them.

The 2025 Reagan Harvey Character Counts Awards Ceremony will be held 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at the Decatur Conference Center. Now in its 12th year, the program recognizes one graduating senior from each high school in Wise County who exemplifies exceptional character.

Unlike academic or athletic scholarships, the $10,000 award is based solely on integrity, leadership and service.

We ask [schools] to take grades and athletics out of the equation for this award,” said Brian Stephens, of Stephens, Bastian and Cartwright, the event’s title sponsor. “There’s nothing wrong with it, but there’s already a lot of academic and athletic scholarships available. Our goal from the beginning was to make character a focal point, because some students don’t have athletic ability or desire, and some may not be a great student, but that doesn’t mean they’re not a great person.”

Founded in 2014, the scholarship program has awarded more than $878,000 to local students. Each nominee is selected by a faculty-led committee at their school, with character as the only judging criteria. The program was created to spotlight students whose contributions may otherwise go unnoticed and to send a message that in Wise County, character truly counts.

The scholarship is named in honor of Reagan Harvey, a Wise County student who has overcome lifelong health challenges with grace and compassion. Her story continues to inspire the program and its mission. For more information, or to support the scholarship, visit characternow.net or call Stephens Bastian & Cartwright, (940) 627-8888.
