With four second-place finishes, the Alvord Lady Bulldogs placed second at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s Region 6 Division 3 meet Saturday at Chico High School.

Alvord finished with 26 points.

“I was ecstatic about the second-place team finish at the regional meet. We ended up beating a lot of great 3A programs,” said Alvord coach Quentin Berend. “All of them will be back next year, so the girls powerlifting program will keep getting better.”

Avery Fox, Audra Nivens, Kelcy Watkins and Jayci Malone claimed silver medals for the Lady Bulldogs and will advance to the state meet.

Makamdyn Mayfield and Cassidy Skelton punched their tickets to the state meet after having been selected as 2A big school qualifiers in their weight classes.

Alvord’s Andrea Mora will serve as an alternate in the 181-pound division.

“I’m very proud to get to coach these young ladies,” Bearden said. “They work their tails off, both in the weight room and in the classroom. Their weight gains show this, and they keep hitting personal records every meet.”

The Boyd Lady Jackets finished 13th with six points.

Jessie Nelson will advance to state after placing third in her weight class.

“I’m very happy and proud of each of our lifters,” said Boyd coach Vance Estel. “They have had to deal with a crazy season, and they’ve all done an amazing job.”

The Chico Lady Dragons were held scoreless and finished tied for 21st.

Candy Rodriguez was selected to move on to state as a 2A small school qualifier in her division.

“I am so proud of Candy for coming out for powerlifting this year,” said Chico coach Monte Sewell. “Her hard work and dedication have paid off. She’s done a great job this season, and I look forward to her competing next year as well.”

The THSWPA state meet will be held Thursday at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi.
