Grand opening set for outdoor gym

DECATUR

The City of Decatur will unveil its new Fitness Court at Renshaw Park next week.

The launch event for the outdoor gym is 11 a.m. Nov. 21. At the grand opening, residents are invited to try out the workout stations and learn about upcoming wellness events and programming.

“This is an exciting addition for our city,” said Decatur City Manager Nate Mara in a press release. “We value playing a small role in the many efforts to increase quality of life by providing options for families to enjoy our parks while getting out and being active.”

The equipment for the outdoor gym off Farm Road 51 South was installed in October.

The park addition is through the National Fitness Campaign (NFC), a nationwide wellness consulting firm that partners with cities and schools. The NFC has partnered with hundreds of entities since 2012 to install its seven-station outdoor gyms across the country. The new gym at Renshaw Park is the first in Wise County.

To fund the gym, the city utilized a grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas and funds from the Economic Development Corporation. The city received $50,000 from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. The Decatur EDC gave $100,000. Wise Health System also contributed to the project, Mara said.

“The Decatur Economic Development Corporation (DEDC) board and staff are excited to provide financial support for the first Fitness Court in Wise County,” said Decatur EDC Executive Director Kevin Holzbog. “Part of the DEDC’s mission is to attract a strong workforce for the future. This Fitness Court is another excellent quality of life asset for residents of today and tomorrow.”

The equipment at the gym allows for people to work out using their own body weight. There is also a corresponding app, The Fitness Court App, that guides users through various workouts and training options on the equipment.
