Despite a strong performance from former Eagle ace pitcher Bryce Elder, the Atlanta Braves’ lineup could not back up the Decatur native with runs to claim the win in his recent outing.
Elder struck out a career-high 12 batters in an 8-inning no-decision effort, as the Braves dropped Game 2 of their three-game road series against the San Francisco Giants Sunday at Oracle Park, 3-2. The Giants swept Atlanta, earning 5-4 (10 innings) and 4-3 wins in Games 1 and 3, respectively.
In the best start of his 4-year tenure, Elder gave up one run on three hits, and lowered his season earned run average to 4.08.
Elder’s lone run allowed was a solo home run by Giants designated Wilmer Flores in the bottom of the fourth inning that gave San Francisco a 1-0 lead. The Braves tied the game with a lead-off homer by center fielder Michael Harris II.
With one out in top of the sixth, the Braves took the lead after designated hitter Marcell Ozuna grounded into a force out, allowing right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. to score from third. After Elder was pulled for relief pitcher Pierce Johnson in the bottom of the ninth, Giants third baseman Matt Chapman belted a 2-run home run with two outs to ensure a San Francisco walk-off victory.
Giants first baseman Dominic Smith registered a 1-out single against Elder in the second. Elder also surrendered a 2-out double against San Francisco center fielder Daniel Johnson in the third.
Elder, the 156th overall pick (Round 5) of the 2020 MLB Draft, remains 2-3 through 10 Major League starts in the 2025 season with 49 strikeouts and 16 walks in 57.1 innings. He currently holds a .238 batting average against.
In 61 games with the Braves, Elder is 18-16 with a 4.16 ERA. He’s struck out 270 and walked 119 over 335.2 innings.
As of Monday morning, Atlanta (27-37) sat in fourth place in the National League East standings behind the New York Mets (42-24), Philadelphia Phillies (37-28) and Washington Nationals (30-35). The Braves were 14 games back of the Mets, and held a 2.5 game lead over the fifth-place Miami Marlins.
According to ESPN pitching projections, Elder is slated to return to the mound Friday in Game 1 of the Braves’ home series against the Colorado Rockies, opposing veteran pitcher German Marquez. Game time is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. local time.
