5 Things to Know: The Week Ahead in Wise for Saturday, September 14, 2019


#1: CHAMBER POWERS ACTIVATE!

For the fourth year, the Bridgeport and Decatur Chamber of Commerces are teaming up to bring the community one super-duper joint luncheon. It’s 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Decatur Conference Center, and speaker is Kathy Gruver, a motivational health speaker.

Gruver hosts a national television show based on her first book, “The Alternative Medicine Cabinet” and earned her doctorate in natural health. She’s been featured in publications around the world, on more than 250 radio and TV shows and is a TEDx speaker.

#2: WELCOME BACK, BULLS

Bridgeport High School will celebrate homecoming next week.

The parade is 7 p.m. Monday in downtown Bridgeport. The Bulls will face Lake Worth on the gridiron 7:30 p.m. Friday, and homecoming royalty will be crowned at halftime.

Other activities may be planned at individual campuses throughout the week. Parents, check your campus’ social media and school newsletters for specifics.

#3: TRIVIA NIGHT

Decatur Public Library’s trivia night at Trinity Street Coffee Bar is Thursday. The fun will be had 7 to 9 p.m., and this month’s theme is “The Office.”

Contestants can sip tasty concoctions made by the Trinity Street baristas and bartenders while playing for prizes and gift certificates. Maybe you’ll win a Dundie!

#4: GIVE BIG

North Texas Giving Day – an annual 18-hour online giving extravaganza for non-profits – is Thursday, and several local groups are participating, including United Way of Wise County, Wise Health Foundation and Jenny’s Hope.

Giving Day is run by Communities Foundation of Texas. If participating non-profits reach certain donation goals, they’re eligible for bonuses … so give as much as you can!

#5: FOR LOVE OF COUNTRY

The 10th annual reading in Wise County of the Constitution of the United States is Tuesday, the 232nd anniversary of its ratification. The event is planned by the John B. Denton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and will be held at the Wise County Veterans Memorial Park.

Readers include elected officials, community members and DAR members.

County Judge J.D. Clark will also issue a proclamation. The public is invited to attend.
