PAYING DOWN COMP TIME – Sheriff Lane Akin plans to chip away at the sheriff’s office comp time with money paid to his department for housing Collin County inmates. Wise County, along with other Texas jails, are housing the inmates while Collin County builds a new jail. Wise County is paid $56 per day, per inmate, and on any given day, there are usually 20 Collin County inmates in the Wise County Jail. Akin said the department’s comp time is at about $500,000. “We have [used this method to pay comp time] in the past, several years ago,” said County Auditor Ann McCuiston. “The thing is, we just have to watch that it doesn’t get back up there.” Read more in the midweek Messenger on newsstands now.
