The driver of a vehicle traveling the wrong way on U.S. 81/287 Saturday evening was arrested after another motorist shot out one of the vehicle’s tires near NRS south of Decatur.

Alejandro Flores, 27, of Decatur, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, second offense; possession of a controlled substance, penalty group 1, less than 1 gram; and possession of a controlled substance in a correctional facility. Flores is in Wise County Jail with his total bond set at $22,000.

Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said dispatch received approximately 30 calls around 7:30 p.m. about a driver going southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. 81/287 near NRS.

“The driver made a u-turn and then went northbound in the southbound lanes,” Akin said.

Flores stopped his vehicle across the southbound lanes. A retired officer from Montague County got out of a vehicle that his wife had pulled into the crossover.

“He got out of the vehicle and fired a couple of rounds and struck the passenger side rear tire,” Akin said.

Flores was arrested by a Wise County officer with the assistance of two Decatur officers.

When Flores was booked into jail for the DWI, Akin said he was found to be in possession of a controlled substance believed to be methamphetamine, resulting in the additional charges.

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the incident. After visiting with the district attorney, Akin said they will present their findings to a grand jury “to find out if the shooting was justified.”

The name of the retired officer was not released due to the ongoing investigation.
