A fight in a local motel parking lot has left one man in critical condition and another in jail.

Lt. Delvon Campbell with the Decatur Police Department said dispatchers received a call just after midnight Thursday morning about a possibly intoxicated person pointing a gun in the Ramada Inn motel parking lot in the 1500 block of U.S. 81/287. Officers arrived to find out a physical altercation had taken place between two adult men who had been staying at the motel.

One of the men – identified as Billy Cansler, 58, of Gainesville – was severely injured and was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

Police arrested Andre Michael Woodward, 23, of Bartlesville, Okla., and charged him with aggravated assault causes serious bodily injury. He remained in the Wise County Jail Friday with bond set at $100,000.

Campbell said officers determined that Cansler pulled into the parking lot and, for an unknown reason, a disagreement ensued between him and Woodward. At one point, Cansler pulled out a gun and Woodward and two other people he was with left the immediate area. After the gun was put away, Campbell said Woodward returned and began fighting with Cansler in the parking lot.

Cansler has remained at JPS in critical condition since the assault, according to the officer.

“We’ve spoken with the family every day, and it’s still touch and go with his condition at this time,” Campbell said Friday.

The two men apparently did not know each other prior to the incident, Campbell said.
