The number of positive influenza cases since the first of the year in the Wise Health System emergency room broke into the triple digits this week.

With 25 patients diagnosed with the virus since Tuesday, the number of cases in the ER reached 110 over the first 12 days of 2018.

The numbers do not reflect patients diagnosed at independent doctor offices or urgent care facilities.

The hospital had 271 cases of flu in December.

As of Friday morning, the hospital was holding only three patients in the ER, according to Shannon Spann, WHS spokesperson.

Since Jan. 1, 1,034 patients have been through the ER.

Earlier in the week, the hospital advised patients with flu-like symptoms to make appointments with their primary care physician or to utilize urgent care facilities, unless they had a long medical history or underlying respiratory complications or diabetes.

Preventive measures – washing hands, covering coughs and staying home if you are running fever – are encouraged.
