Three potential candidates for the Decatur School Board got a preview of the job Thursday night.

Decatur ISD Superintendent Judi Whitis and trustees Wade Watson, Matt Joiner and Cheri Boyd held an information session at the administration building for candidates. Filing for the May 5 election opens Wednesday and runs through Feb. 16.

The school board will have three spots on the ballot – the seats of Place 7 Matt Joiner, Place 6 Kevin Haney and Place 7 Marsha Hafer. Joiner and Hafer said they intend to run for reelection. Haney said in a text Friday that he will not seek reelection.

The district held the information session for the first time to get facts about the role of board members to potential candidates.

“You don’t what you are facing until you get on the board,” said Watson, who is in his second term and is currently the board president.

Whitis presented facts about the district, which reached an enrollment of 3,370 students this week, to the prospective candidates. Whitis also went over continuing education requirements and local policies describing the role of trustees. Information on political advertising was also handed out.

“It’s a critical role moving forward,” Whitis said. “If you’re willing to help, this is a good place to start.”

Joiner, who is vice-president of the board, said he plans to file Wednesday.

“There’s a lot of positive things happening in the district,” Joiner said. “Education is my passion. I enjoy working with Dr. Whitis. I still have kids in the district.”

Hafer also plans to turn in her election packet Wednesday to run for a third term.

“I’m a retired school teacher. I’m proud to live in this community and enjoy serving,” Hafer said. “I’m proud of the board. We work well together and put the needs of every kid in the district first.”

Thomas Houchin, Charles Tibbels and Pete Rivera expressed interest in running for the board during Thursday’s session.
