CALENDAR PROPOSED – Alvord ISD is seeking feedback on the proposed 2018-19 school calendar. The calendar is on the district’s Facebook page. Send emails with comments to rbrown@alvordisd.net.

SPRING CLEANING – Alvord ISD is cleaning out the old middle school building for storage. The district wants to provide an opportunity for groups or individuals to retrieve items used in fundraisers. Contact Kelly Martin 940-427-5975.


STAFF DEVELOPMENT – March 9 is a staff development day and student holiday. Spring break will start March 12 and run through March 16.

OPEN HOUSE – Boyd Intermediate will hold Open House Tuesday.

PUBLIC ACCESS TO LIBRARY – The Boyd Intermediate/Middle School library will open to the public between 5 and 8 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday beginning this week through May 25 to trade books, access the internet and email, and for students to receive help with homework.


THE HUB – Bridgeport Middle School is offering an after-school program, The Hub, every Tuesday and Thursday 3:45 to 5 p.m. Students will receive tutoring and mentoring, eat snacks and play games. Bus rides are offered with permission forms, which should be given to Janelle Gardner at the middle school. The Hub will be at First United Methodist Church, 608 17th Street. RECYCLING CONTEST – Team Green is having a recycling contest at Bridgeport Middle School. The grade level that brings the most aluminum cans will earn a week of Roundup on the turf. The proceeds from selling the cans for recycling will be used to help purchase recycling bins for BMS. The contest ends the week prior to spring break.

FAMILY MATH AND SCIENCE NIGHT – Bridgeport Elementary will hold a family math and science night from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. March 8.


KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP – Chico Elementary will hold its pre-kindergarten and kindergarten roundup from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily this week. Forms are available in the office. Parents should bring the child’s birth certificate, shot records, social security card and proof of residency.

GIFTED AND TALENTED – Chico Elementary will hold a Gifted and Talented meeting in the library from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday. It will be followed by Open House form 6 to 7 p.m.


OPEN HOUSE – Carson, Rann and Young elementary schools will hold Open House 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM – Parents of incoming kindergarten students for 2018-2019 are invited to attend one of the upcoming parent information meetings about the Rann Elementary Dual Language Immersion Program at Rann Library. Sessions are scheduled noon and 6 p.m. on March 6 and 26.


NEF SCHOLARSHIP – The Northwest ISD Education Foundation has opened its annual scholarship application for district students, providing impending graduates with opportunities to have part of their college bills paid for. The application is posted on the NEF website, located at www.nisdtx.org/nef. Students have until March 30, to submit their applications. LOTTERY OPEN FOR PRE-K – Parents and guardians interested in Northwest ISD’s pre-kindergarten program can now register for the district’s lottery system for its tuition-based pre-K program. Two forms of pre-K are available at Northwest ISD, a state-assisted program and a tuition-based program. Families must meet specific requirements for enrollment in the free or state-funded program. The district will use a lottery system to select children for inclusion in the tuition-based program. Both are half-day programs – a morning session and afternoon session. The tuition-based program is paid in 10 monthly installments of $377.80 from Aug. 2018 to May 2019. To enroll in the tuition-based program, parents and guardians must first register their children through the lottery system at www.nisdtx.org/prek before March 9. A drawing will take place March 21 to determine students selected for the program. Registration for the program itself will then begin in mid-April, and parents will have until April 27 to complete the process. Parents and guardians will be able to select what campus their children will attend, subject to classroom space. Children in pre-K during the 2018-19 school year must be 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2018.


HOMEWORK HELP – Paradise Intermediate is offering tutoring for all grade levels 7:30 to 8 a.m. every morning.

TRACK SWEATS – Athletic sweats are for sale through Hometown Tees. Sweatshirts are $26, and sweatpants are $20. They are personalized. Order through a link on the school’s website.


READ ACROSS AMERICA – Slidell will hold a Read Across America event Thursday.

WATER AND SNACK DRIVE – Slidell schools will hold a water and snack drive throughout next week.
