The Slidell Lady Greyhounds set a high bar last season.

Along with winning a fourth straight district title and making a clean sweep of District 21-A, the Lady Greyhounds came a game away from reaching the state tournament, making the 1A Region III final.

Battling injuries this season and with a shorter bench, the Lady Greyhounds have started the year 8-5 after a 60-17 win Tuesday over Bryson.

Slidell will start 21-A play Tuesday, heading to Saint Jo for a 6:30 p.m. tip.

“We’ve had a tough schedule early,” said Slidell coach Lance Shelton. “But having Bailey [Meyer] back has helped. She missed the first seven games.”

Meyer, the 21-A and Wise County MVP last season, scored 17 Tuesday.

“She missed two and half months with a bone bruise,” Shelton said. “She’s looking fine. She’s working at improving her conditioning.”

With Meyer out of the lineup, the Lady Greyhounds received strong contributions from Cate Zuniga, Lexi Swift and Sydney Keating.

“Cate has been a post but is now running some wing and point. She’s filling several roles,” Shelton said. “Her shot is coming along. Swift is shooting the 3 well.”

The Lady Greyhounds’ depth took a big hit with the graduation of Kayson Roof and Kayler Talamantes and Sam Rambsel and Aurora DeLuna moving.

“We don’t have as much depth, but that’s not that unusual for 1A,” Shelton said.

The Lady Greyhounds enter district as the league favorites, but Shelton is quick to point out the improvement of Bellevue, Forestburg, Saint Jo and Prairie Valley.

A district title would put the Lady Greyhounds on the opposite side of the bracket of No. 2 Dodd City.
