Terry Terry of Boyd, perhaps better known as Brother Terry, is running for Precinct 3 constable.

The pastor of Friendship Baptist Church in Boyd will face Charles Applewhite, Cary Mellema and Tony White in the March 6 Republican primary. There is no Democratic opponent, so whoever wins the primary will fill what remains of an unexpired term. The office was left vacant in August when former constable Doug Parr resigned as a condition of a criminal plea deal.

Terry, who has been ministering in Wise County since 2000, said the constable job is another opportunity to serve the community and “do whatever I can to help.”

“I’d be in the public, be amongst the people to get to know them,” he said. “I’m just by nature a people person.”

Terry acknowledged he’s the only candidate with no law enforcement experience, but he sees that as a positive, rather than a negative.

“In today’s society, police officers get a bad rap, and I would like to think I would be able to put a positive picture out there of law enforcement by serving people and helping people,” he said.

Terry said he puts emphasis on the word “peace” in the title of peace officer.

“I want to communicate clearly with people instead of forcing my will on them and actually serve ‘peace’ to our community in a way that is honorable,” he said. “The Lord has just given me a heart for this community. I truly do love the community and want to be involved in it as much as I can.”

Terry has no plans to give up his ministry work but after researching the position, thinks he can serve in both places.

“My calling for the Lord as a pastor is important to me, and it’s first,” he said. “But this is an opportunity to serve the community in a different way.

“I want to fulfull the job [of constable] and do it to the best of my ability.”

Terry said he would be honored to be elected constable in Precinct 3, and if elected, he would take the job “understanding they’re entrusting me to serve them with honesty and integrity.”

While the Terry family lives in Boyd, they also have Paradise connections. Terry’s wife, Cindy, works at Paradise Intermediate School, and their daughter, Maddi, is a student at Paradise High School.
