Blount belonged to a glider club that regularly flies in Wise County, according to Decatur Police Officer Royce Gastineau.

The pilot was first reported missing at 7:07 p.m. when a fellow club member called the sheriff’s office, saying Blount was last heard from at 4 p.m. The caller said Blount was last seen five miles east of Decatur, about one mile north of U.S. 380.

Club members wondered if there had been any reports of a downed aircraft. No crashes had been reported in Wise, Denton or Montague counties.

Gastineau said Blount’s white Toyota pickup was discovered still parked at the Decatur airport. They “pinged” the man’s cell phone, which led them to the crash in a field between Jones Park and the end of an airport runway at 8:28 p.m.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.
