Whitewright pitcher Tucker Caraway silenced the Boyd Lady Yellowjackets’ bats Saturday to finish off the Class 2A area round series.

Caraway limited Boyd to three hits over seven innings in a 9-0 victory in the second game of the series, completing the sweep for the Lady Tigers at Texas Woman’s University in Denton.

“Their pitchers shut us down,” said Boyd coach Brandon Hopkins. “They gave up 11 hits in the series. We usually get that in one game. Today, we had no luck on our side. When we hit the ball hard it was right at them or off them.

“You have to tip your hat to the other team. They are 30-2 on the year for a reason. They are a good team.”

The loss ended Boyd’s season at 25-8. The 2014 Lady Yellowjackets’ 25 wins are a school record.

“We had a great season,” said Boyd pitcher Chelsea Arlington. “Breaking the school record is nothing to be unhappy about.”

Boyd will return all but two players – seniors Gabby Saldivar and Kelcei Ferguson.

“Our seniors did a good job for us,” Hopkins said. “We have all but two back and have high expectations for next year.”

Savannah Foster, Kaytlin Bullard and Chandler Hammon had the Lady Yellowjackets’ three hits against Caraway, who struck out eight.

“She never blew it by us,” Arlington said. “We just swung at bad pitches.”

Whitewright took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second and added a pair of runs in the third. The Lady Tigers built a 6-0 lead with Anna Shope’s double in the fifth.

Shope broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth, belting a three-run homer over the center-field fence.

She went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

Jaidyn Melichar had three hits for the Lady Tigers and drove in two runs with a pair of doubles.

Saldivar took the loss, pitching two and two-thirds, allowing seven hits and three runs – two earned. Arlington pitched the final three and one-third, allowing six runs – two earned – on four hits.
