Since 1978, the non-profit Wise County Committee on Aging has served senior citizens with meals, transportation and activities.

The committee provides home-delivered meals five days a week to homebound citizens except on holidays when frozen meals are delivered the day before. A donation of $2.50 per meal is suggested.

In addition to providing about 90 homebound meals per day through the Meals on Wheels program, the committee provides transportation to senior centers, doctor appointments, shopping, cleaners, grocery stores, the post office, barber/beauty shop and therapy appointments.

Believing that good nutrition is the key to good health, especially for the homebound, the committee provides meals that amount to one-third of the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals for an older adult.

The committee operates three vans daily, Monday through Friday. The organization is always in need of a new vehicle and will welcome any donation of a car or van. Volunteers are also needed.

The group is funded by the North Central Texas Council of Governments Area Agency on Aging, United Way of Wise County, Wise County and local contributions. Donations are encouraged from clients receiving services.

For transportation to medical appointments, seniors must call the committee office at least 24 hours in advance. Transportation hours are 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Arrangements for the wheel chair van may also be made by calling the office.
