From swimming to beach volleyball to skateboarding, cities and towns in Wise County have a number of public parks that provide something for everybody.
Bridgeport Pool
Bridgeport’s city pool is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday from the beginning of June to the beginning of September. Admission is $2.
The pool has a 21-foot by 60-foot bathhouse and concession stand.
Infant, beginning, intermediate and adult swimming lessons are offered, along with water aerobics. Lessons are $45.

Harwood Park
Named for a former mayor, Bridgeport’s Harwood Park serves as the site for the city’s annual Butterfield Stage Days.
It’s the city’s largest and oldest park. It is located at Texas 114 and Cates Street. It offers playground equipment, two sand volleyball courts, monkey bars and public restrooms.
The pavilion, complete with new restroom facilities, is available for rental by calling city hall at (940) 683-5906. There is a $10 rental fee and a $100 deposit, which is refundable if the area is clean after usage.
Alcohol is prohibited and park users are encouraged to clean up after themselves.
Payne Park
Payne Park features a skateboard park, picnic tables and restrooms. The park is located on the west side of Bridgeport on FM 920.
The park is named in honor of Lester Payne.
The park is open during daylight hours only. The use of alcohol is prohibited and park visitors are asked to clean their areas when they leave.
Kenny Renshaw Park
Located on FM 51 south, Kenny Renshaw Park is the largest city park in Decatur.
Park hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. unless an approved activity is being held. The parks have softball fields, soccer fields, a basketball court, a sand volleyball court, a gravel jogging track, three handicapped accessible picnic tables, a pavilion and assorted playground equipment.
The city charges a fee for use of the softball and soccer fields. There is a $20 fee charged each day of league play for anyone not belonging to the youth association. There is a $24 per team fee for tournaments and a $5 per person, per team charge for league play.
All other fields, courts, picnic and playgrounds areas are on a first come, first serve basis.
Melba Doyle Park
Park is located at the end of Melba Doyle Road off the 380 bypass in Decatur and is open from sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.
Located in a cool and wooded area, the park is perfect for a picnic or swaying in a swing.
Hollis and Sue Jones Park
Located north of downtown Decatur and adjacent to the Decatur Country Club, Jones Park, which opened in 2005, has two baseball fields, a tot lot (playground), volleyball courts, basketball courts, a combination soccer/football field and a walking trail. Fishing is also available at a pond stocked with catfish, bass and perch.
The park closes after dark. Call Decatur City Hall to rent the park. Usage fees are the same as other parks.
Harmon Park
The park is located between North Miller and North Cates streets in Decatur. Park hours are from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. unless there is a city sanctioned event.
The centerpiece of the park is the Crystelle Waggoner Community Playground. The handicapped accessible equipment was unveiled in May 2005 after hundreds of volunteers spent a week constructing the playground.
The park also features a skateboard park and baseball fields, including downsized fields for little league play.
Tournament fees are $25 per team. Call Decatur City Hall to reserve a field.
Mary Potts Leone Park
The park is located on Texas 114 in Paradise.
The parks features three baseball/softball fields, including two lighted fields, which are both used by little league and adult leagues. The park also has a covered pavilion and public restrooms. Youth programs are given priority usage during the summer months.
James Snodgrass Memorial Park
The park is being constructed on Hobbs Street in Boyd.
Upon its completion, the park will feature two soccer fields, two baseball fields, beach volleyball, a pavilion, a walking trail, a playground, shuffle board, horse shoes, picnic tables and tennis courts with basketball goals.
Runaway Bay Municipal Swimming Pool
The pool is located on the west end of Runaway Bay on Port-O-Call Drive, accessed from U.S. 380 at exit 8.
Pool hours are noon to 6 p.m. on Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and on Wednesdays from noon to 8 p.m. The pool is open daily during the months of June, July and August and on weekends only in May and September.
Admission is $3 for residents and $4 for non-residents. Family season passes are available for $150 for residents.

West Side Park
The park is located on Runaway Bay Drive near Elm Court and features playground equipment and a basketball court.
Cricket Ridge Park
The park is located near the pool at exit 8 off U.S. 380. It features a walking trail and playground equipment. The park overlooks the beach.
Delora Doughty Royal Park
The park is located in a quiet neighborhood in Newark across from the fire hall. It features playground equipment, picnic tables and a gazebo.
M. Robinson Park
Located one block north of the Chico city square, M. Robinson Park features playground equipment, picnic tables and a skate park.
East Side Park
The city of Decatur opened a new city park on June 23, 2007, at the corner of Arthur and Brown streets. The park has not, as of this printing, been officially named.
It was opened in conjunction with the annual Juneteenth celebration held by the East Side Alumni. The park features picnic tables, playground equipment and will have a basketball court. |
