The Wise County Old Settlers Reunion is an event that sets apart this county. The week-long camp and festival occurs the last full week in July at Joe Wheeler Park off Farm Road 51 in Decatur. Admission is free.
As the oldest recurring public event in the county, the Old Settlers Reunion originally served as a homecoming for Confederate soldiers. It was first held in the late 1860s following the end of the Civil War.
Today, the reunion grounds are filled with cabins, where many families spend the entire week. A campers’ dinner and meeting on Sunday kicks off the activities. Camp decorating contest winners are announced during the dinner.
A carnival with rides and games is also located on the reunion grounds and entertainment is provided nightly at the pavilion.
Charity organizations sell food and drinks and the Decatur Lion’s Club handles parking. All parking fees help fund community projects. |
