Decatur’s Main Street program is in its 13th year and, because of Main Street efforts, the historic square in Decatur is thriving.
Many store fronts have been redesigned, preserving the historic integrity of the buildings. The square also boasts new sidewalks and crosswalks and period lighting, thanks to the efforts of the Main Street program.
Main Street is also responsible for several promotions on the square throughout the year, events that bring visitors to Decatur to shop throughout the city.
Every Easter, Main Street sponsors a free egg hunt for youngsters, along with games and activities. On the week following Mother’s Day in May, Main Street recognizes Preservation Week. Free tours of the courthouse and historic downtown are provided. Decatur’s biggest event of the year is Chisholm Trail Days in June, a summer festival of food, fun, games, contests and arts and crafts, all with a western flair.
During the summer, a program called Thursday Night Flicks offers free movies on the courthouse square. Also, the first Saturday of the month, from May through October - excluding July - the square plays host to Cruise Nights where antique and classic automobiles, trucks and tractors are shown off by their owners.
Main Street also sponsors a clean-up effort and city-wide garage sales.
