| A TUF DAY - Tuf Cooper proved over the weekend that he is ready to take on the nation's top cowboys at the upcoming Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The Decatur teenager won the finals of the tie-down roping in dramatic fashion Saturday at River City Roundup. He won the eight-man semifinal round in 8.5 seconds and came back to win the finals in 8.2 seconds, just one-tenth of a second over Mike Johnson on the final run of the competition. Cooper moved into fifth place in the Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings with his $16,875 payday. |
| CONSTRUCTION - Crews were to begin resurfacing Farm Road 51 from U.S. Highway 81/287 to the Sheriff's Posse Grounds in Decatur Sunday. Crews will work from about 8 p.m.-6 a.m. through Thursday to complete the work. OFFICE CLOSED - The Wise County Domestic Violence Task Force Outreach Office is closed today and tomorrow while moving to new offices. For emergencies, call the 24-hour hotline at (940) 626-4855 or 911. The new office will open Wednesday at 407 S. Washburn St. in Decatur. MEETING - The Wise County Retired School Personnel meets at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Catfish O'Harlies in Decatur. LOAN INFORMATION - Tito Garcia with the Texas Veterans Land Board will be at the Veterans Service Office, 205 N. State St. in Decatur, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30. For information on property loans, building new homes or home improvements, call for an appointment, (940) 627-2470. FUN EVENT - To register a team for the Oct. 18 Wellness Challenge, sponsored by the Wise Regional Health Foundation, call (940) 626-1384. Events include water balloon throw, obstacle course, tug of war, free throw contest and more. CHECK SCAM - Decatur police are warning residents of a check scam. Several people have reported receiving a letter and a check in the mail from organizations such as Prize America or http://www.publishersclearinghouse.com The letter tells them they have won a large sum of money and instructs them to cash the check and send it back to the organization in order to pay the taxes on the prize money. Others ask them to pay a percentage of the prize and the organization will send the prize money to the recipient. If you feel that you have received a letter and check as described, the police ask that you do not cash the check and take it to the police department. RAFFLE - The Wise County Committee on Aging is selling raffle tickets for a full-sized quilt. Tickets are $1 or six for $5. For more information call (940) 627-5329. All proceeds benefit the Meals-On-Wheels program. Drawing is Wednesday. FUNERAL - Service for Annie Hicks Sammons, 95, of Bridgeport is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hawkins Funeral Chapel with burial in East Bridgeport Cemetery. Family visitation from 6-8 tonight. She was the mother of Lenora Cansler of Bridgeport. |
