Update for Monday, June 29, 2009
GRASS FIRE - Cottondale, Salt Creek and Boonsville Fire Departments battled a grass fire on County Road 3661 in Cottondale Saturday around 2:30 p.m. The fire destroyed a small wooden shed, but firefighters were able to stop the acre-sized fire before it reached any homes.

RAIN - Parts of Wise County were receiving rain this morning as Update was going to press. Chico had recorded 0.2 inches. A chance of rain remains in the forecast for the rest of the day. Highs are expected to top out at 92, a relative break from the 103 and 101 degree highs from Saturday and Sunday.

FOOD HANDLER'S PROGRAM - The Wise County Extension office is offering a Texas Department of State Health Services accredited food handlers program from 3 to 5 tonight at the Extension office, 206 S. State St., in Decatur. The class will cover good personal hygiene, cross contamination, and time and temperature abuse. Cost is $15. To reserve a spot, call the Extension office at (940) 627-3341.

READING CLUB - The Decatur Public Library's Online Teen Summer Reading Club continues through July 28. Students entering grades 5-12 can participate. To enter go to: www.decaturpubliclibrary.com/tsrc.htm. For each book read, your name goes into a drawing for prizes. Awards will also be given for best review, funniest review and most books read.

BENEFIT - Wise Electric Cooperative is selling briskets to support Mary's Gift, Wise Regional Health Foundation's program offering free mammograms to underserved Wise County women. Briskets must be ordered by 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, and can be picked up after 2 p.m. Thursday, July 2. For more information, call (940) 627-2167 or (940) 683-8790.

COUNTY COMMISSIONERS - Wise County commissioners meet at 9 this morning. They will hear a proposal from Charlie Kearns on a design services agreement for the preliminary design of a new courthouse. An Oncor representative will also make a presentation on windmill power.

4TH FEST - Runaway Bay's 4th Fest is Saturday. Events include booths, crafts, food, children's activities, entertainment and a golf cart parade. Fireworks over Lake Bridgeport will begin about 9:30 p.m.

FUNERALS - Services are pending for Nelda Davidson, 77, of Bridgeport and Glinn Morrow, 83, of Chico with Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport. SERVICES are pending for Juanita Spencer, 84, and Robert Weesner, 43, both of Boyd at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Chapel in Boyd. GRAVESIDE service for Renee Anna Windle, 85, of Aurora is 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at D/FW National Cemetery. Christian-Hawkins is handling arrangements. SERVICE is pending for Faye Singleton, 86, of Decatur at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.
