SERGEANT DISMISSED - On Thursday night the Rhome City Council voted unanimously to terminate the employment of police sergeant Jennifer Ruiz. Mayor Mark Lorance cited an inability of Ruiz and police chief James Rose to work together as the impetus for the dismissal. Ruiz had worked for the department for seven years. Several residents attended the meeting in support of Ruiz.
AUTRY TO RETIRE - Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Mark Autry has announced he will not seek another term. In a press release, Autry, a Democrat, said he was recently called as full time pastor of the First Baptist Church in Boyd and, "I feel that I need to focus my time and energy in full time service to the church." The Precinct 3 justice of the peace position will appear on next year's ballot.
JV GAMES CANCELED - Decatur ISD 9th and JV Football games at Iowa Park have been canceled for tonight due to bad weather.
FAIR WINNER - Denese Saade of Chico has won first place in the "Fresh Taste for the Family" contest at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. Her Southwestern Ranch Chicken Salad Cups won the "green ribbon" of the event, the color associated with the ranch dressing company sponsoring of the event. Her recipe will compete against 45 other first place winning recipes from around the country.
MORE RAIN - You might keep the umbrella handy today as the forecast calls for a 70 percent chance of rain. Wise County remains in a dense fog advisory through 9 a.m. and a flash flood watch from 1 p.m. today through Friday evening.

VETERANS PICNIC - The Wise County Veterans Council is sponsoring its annual Veterans Picnic for veterans and their families from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Women's Building at the Sheriff's Posse Grounds in Decatur. The barbecue meal with trimmings and dessert will be served at 11:30. The picnic will also include a silent auction, sweet walk and drawings for door prizes.
GIRLS' NIGHT OUT - The theme of this month's Girls' Night Out tonight in Decatur is "Paint the Town Pink." Participating merchants will be open until 8 p.m. in downtown Decatur. Several shops will be serving refreshments and raising money for breast cancer awareness.
