HEAVY RAINS - Overnight storms dumped several inches of rain in Wise County. Rainfall totals include 3.5 inches in Bridgeport, 2.7 in Boyd, 2 in Slidell, 1.83 in Decatur and 1.8 in Runaway Bay. Rain should end this morning. Water has flowed over several county roads, and rescue workers have been called out to rescue motorists stranded by the high water at least twice this morning in the Cottondale area on County Roads 3381 and 3355. No major injuries have been reported. Several roads in the area were being closed this morning due to high water. Wise County remains in a flash flood watch through tonight. Decatur was a cool 49 degrees at 8 a.m., and the high is expected around 61.

PARK OPENING POSTPONED - The grand opening of Bridgeport's Northwest Park has been canceled due to the recent amount of rainfall. The grand opening had been scheduled for Saturday.

SERGEANT DISMISSED - Last night the Rhome City Council voted unanimously to terminate police sergeant Jennifer Ruiz. Mayor Mark Lorance cited an inability of Ruiz and police chief James Rose to work together as the impetus for the dismissal. Ruiz had worked for the department for seven years. Several residents attended the meeting in support of Ruiz.

HILL STILL RECOVERING - Local attorney Kendall Hill who was injured in Tuesday's plane crash near Aurora remains at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth and "is progressing" according to a family spokesman. Hill was one of four people injured in the crash.

DISTRICT BEGINS - While wins have been hard to come by lately for Wise County football teams, the beginning of district play promises to change that as county teams begin to play each other. Tonight's intra-county matchup pits Chico at Boyd. Other games include Millsap at Alvord, Bridgeport at Burkburnett, Iowa Park at Decatur, Paradise at Jacksboro and Northwest at L.D. Bell.

BATTLE OF THE BIRDS - A couple of volleyball teams undefeated in district play will go head to head tonight. The seventh-ranked Decatur Lady Eagles host the Iowa Park Lady Hawks at 5:30 tonight.

FALL FESTIVAL - The 12th annual Greenwood Fall Festival is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in downtown Greenwood. The event will include a 10 a.m. parade, craft booths, game booths, children's train rides, bingo and food booths. The Greenwood E.E. Club will sell pies, cakes, cookies and canned goods. FISH FRY - While you are in Greenwood for the Fall Festival, stick around for the Greenwood-Slidell Volunteer Fire Department's annual fish fry is 5 p.m. Saturday in Greenwood. The event will include live entertainment, live auction and raffle.

VETERANS' PICNIC - The Wise County Veterans Council is sponsoring its annual Veterans' Picnic for veterans and their families from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Rabbit Building at the Sheriff's Posse Grounds in Decatur. The barbecue meal with trimmings and dessert will be served at 11:30. The picnic will also include a silent auction, sweet walk and drawings for door prizes.

BENEFIT SALE - A county wide garage sale and bake sale is 8 a.m. Saturday at the Extension office, 206 S. State St. in Decatur. All proceeds raised will go to Laura Jeanne, a 4-H volunteer injured in an accident that left her in a wheelchair.

OFFICE CLOSED - The Texas Neighborhood Services office in Decatur is out of state funding and will remain closed until it receives additional funding. Clients are advised to check with the office periodically to find out when it reopens.

PET ADOPTION - During the month of October, some area businesses will make a $5 donation to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for every animal adopted from the Wise County Animal Shelter. The shelter is also accepting donated items (dry food and cleaners) in lieu of adoption fees. For more information call (940) 627- 7577.

CROSS COUNTRY MEET MOVED - The Reunion Run Cross-Country Meet Saturday in Decatur has changed locations due to poor running conditions at the Wise County Reunion Grounds. The meet will be run in the fields around Decatur Middle School starting at 8 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers are asked to report at 7:15.

TRANSPORTATION MEETING - Decatur will host a Strategic Transportation and Infrastructure Briefing Monday, Oct. 12 from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Civic Center. Speakers will include State Sen. Craig Estes, Granbury Mayor David Southern and Irving Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Rose Cannaday. It is sponsored by TEX-21.

RABIES CLINIC - Decatur Animal Control will provide $6 rabies vaccinations for all dogs and cats over 12 weeks old 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church of Decatur parking lot. Other vaccinations will be available at reduced prices. All dogs must be on a leash, and cats must be in carriers. Decatur Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association will assist.

MEET THE REPUBLICANS - Wise County Republicans will have a meet and greet 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Brushy Creek Vineyard. The public is invited to sample wine, other beverages and finger food. Republican office holders and 2010 declared Republican candidates are invited.

SOFTBALL - Batbusters 12-and-under Girls Select Softball Team will hold tryouts/open practice 3-6 p.m. Sunday at the Bridgeport Softball Field. For information call Tim at (817) 694-7909.

FUNERALS - Graveside service for Maureen Navarro, 54, of Killeen is 1 p.m. Saturday at Alvord Cemetery. Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur is handling arrangements.

VISITATION for Virgie Jeanette Rhoudes, 38, formerly of Boyd is 3-5 p.m. today at Davis Funeral Chapel in Fort Worth.

SERVICE for Betty Perkins, 81, of Boyd is pending at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd.
