TWO DIE IN WRECK - An Alabama couple were killed Tuesday morning in a three-car wreck on U.S. 380 a couple of miles east of Decatur. Carlton A. Bennett, 74, and his wife, Meriam Bea Bennett, 71, of Grove Hill, Ala., both died at the scene. The driver of another vehicle involved in the crash, Judith Hatfield Lambert, 72, of McKinney was injured and taken by ground ambulance to Denton Regional Hospital. The third driver, Laura Patterson, 46, of Krum was not injured. Department of Public Safety Trooper Greg Hair said according to witnesses, Lambert was westbound when her sports utility vehicle drifted into the eastbound lane where it hit the Bennetts' car head-on.
PARKING LOT TALK - The Decatur School Board last night moved a step closer to improving the parking lot on the south side of the support services building. The project has been discussed at several recent board meetings, and last night board members were presented with cost estimates for a two-phase project. The first phase would create a parking area with 119 spaces at an estimated cost of $317,837. The board will get a more firm cost estimate at its December meeting. Phase 2, which would create 190 more parking areas, could be an option if the school's November bond issue is passed by voters. The bond package contains money for the repair of retaining walls around the parking area.
UTILITY ASSISTANCE - The Texas Neighborhood Services Utility Assistance Program has money available for utility assistance in Wise County. The office, located at 300 N. Trinity, Ste. B in Decatur, is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday.
