PASTOR AND WIFE FOUND ASPHYXIATED - The pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Boyd and his wife were found asphyxiated from carbon monoxide in their home at approximately 5 p.m. on Sunday. The pastor Robert Worley, 73, and his wife, Jerry Worley, 74, were transported to Wise Regional in Decatur. Their condition is unknown.
GUILTY VERDICT - Thursday afternoon a Wise County jury found Michael Almendarez, 36, of Bridgeport guilty of sexual assault and indecency with a child. The victim was 16 years old and a sophomore in high school when the crime occurred in May 2008. Almendarez was released from prison in December 2007 after serving a 15-year sentence for robbery with bodily injury. On Friday morning the jury gave him the minimum sentence of 25 years. Texas law reads that he will not be eligible for parole until at least serving twelve-and-a-half years of his sentence.
SCHOOL HAS A NAME - Decatur's next elementary under construction south of town now has a name - Young Elementary. The school board last night approved naming the school after Allan Ray and Nelda Young. Allan Ray Young spent 38 years in the district, 24 years as a teacher/coach and 14 as an elementary principal, and Nelda Young spent 43 years in the district as a business teacher and administrator.
NO BIBLE COURSE - The Decatur School Board voted 4-2 to not implement a Bible course at the high school, following the recommendation of the administration. Superintendent Gary Gindt said his main concern was the fact that the Texas Education Agency declined to offer training for the course. Social studies teachers at the high school said they were concerned that adding the course could lead to eliminating a current elective. They said that the cultural significance of Judaism and Christianity is already integrated into current world geography and world history curriculum.
SALES TAX INCOME A LITTLE SHORT - The Decatur Economic Development Corp. finished the fiscal year just $12,855 short of its budgeted sales tax revenues. The EDC has planned on receiving $1,250,000 as its one-third share of the city sales tax for the year ending Sept. 30. But declining revenues the past several months caused the year-end figure to fall just short. City Manager Brett Shannon said that considering where some cities in the area finished the year, it could have been a lot worse. This year the EDC is budgeting $1 million from sales taxes.
FOOTBALL - Six local teams are in action tonight, with homecoming games in Decatur and Northwest. Decatur will take on Argyle, and Northwest hosts South Grand Prairie. Other games include Alvord at Windthorst, Boyd will play Godley at Aledo, Chico at City View and Bowie at Paradise. All games are at 7:30. On the court, a battle of two of the top volleyball teams in the state will take place when the No. 9 state-ranked Lady Eagles volleyball team hosts No. 11 Argyle at 5 p.m.
