COURT EMPLOYEE ARRESTED – Texas Ranger Jim Holland led a raid in Decatur early Friday that resulted in the arrest of 271st District Court Reporter Jeff Goodwyn, 56, of Decatur on charges of illegal drug possession. Sheriff David Walker said Goodwyn was arrested at 1:50 a.m. at a motel in Decatur after delivering illegal drugs to an undercover DPS agent. Following Goodwyn’s arrest officers searched his home and found drug paraphernalia in the basement of the house. Walker said affidavits for the warrants were signed by a district judge in Denton County. “There were no other arrests, but the investigation is continuing,” Walker said. In addition to the drugs, officers also confiscated several computers during the raid. In addition to Holland and other DPS officers, agents from the U.S. Secret Service and the Wise County sheriff’s office have been involved in the investigation which has been ongoing for several weeks, Walker said. THREAT MADE, NO BOMB FOUND - Wise County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a bomb threat at Paradise High School after a handwritten note was found in the boys bathroom at the high school indicating a bomb would go off on the last day of school. Wednesday night investigators searched the school and area with the help of explosive detecting dogs from the ATF and the Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth. Sheriff David Walker said nothing was found, but they would increase security at school today and at graduation Friday evening.

150-YEAR-OLD HOME LOST IN FIRE - A historic home burned to the ground Tuesday in what appears to be an accidental, electrical fire. The owner of the 150-year-old structure, located in the 100 block of Private Road 4370 between Decatur and Boyd, was remodeling the home for a relative to move in. Investigators say the power had been turned on earlier Tuesday, and the tenant had put in a load of laundry and gone out to eat when he got a phone call around 6 p.m. notifying him that his house was in flames. Although firefighters from Decatur, Boyd and Rhome were able to contain the fire to the home and surrounding grass and trees, the structure was a total loss. “The three departments handled it extremely well,” said Kennedale fire marshal J.C. Travis. who is filling in for Wise County Fire Marshal Chuck Beard. “But the old lumber and construction method of the home helped feed the fire. There wasn’t a whole lot they could do (to salvage the home). It’s a tragedy to lose a 150-year-old structure. It was an accident, just an unfortunate situation.”

WRECK VICTIM IS ALVORD RESIDENT – Investigators of Tuesday’s fatal crash near Alvord have identified the victim as Donald Lee McDiffett, 51, of Alvord. According to DPS Trooper Shawn Younger, McDiffett was crossing from the northbound lane of U.S. 81/287 attempting to turn left onto County Road 1596 when he pulled out in front of a southbound 18-wheel tractor-trailer and was hit broadside in the passenger side. DECATUR GRADUATION – Decatur High School will hold graduation at 6 tonight at the Coliseum on the campus of the University of North Texas. The most direct route from Decatur to Denton is U.S. 380, but it might be better to take an alternate route unless you plan on leaving very early. The Texas Department of Transportation is scheduled to put in a culvert in the area of Farm Road 156 in Denton County today. The project will require traffic to be reduced to one lane from half-a-mile west of FM 156 to Nail Road, according to TxDOT’s Denton County office. A pilot car will be used to alternately escort eastbound and westbound traffic. Heavy delays are expected. Alternate routes could include going through Slidell and Krum to the north or Justin to the south.

OVERNIGHT RAINFALL – Storms moved through the area this morning, bringing 2.7 inches of rain in Alvord, 0.95 in Decatur, 0.6 in Greenwood, 0.45 in Rhome and 0.33 in Aurora. A chance of showers remains in the forecast for this morning.

For the year, Wise County has received 14.53 inches, or just more than 2 inches below normal. Temperatures ranged from a high of 90 on May 18 to a low of 33 on May 3.

FIRE DESTROYS FAMILY’S HOME – A Chico couple and their nephew escaped with little more than the clothes on their back and their dogs after a fire broke out in their mobile home Tuesday morning. Mary Ozuna and Kevin Martinez were awakened by their nephew, Ricky Coleman, who discovered the fire around 3:15 a.m. The home was completely engulfed in flames when Chico firefighters checked on scene at the home in the 300 block of Sherman Street just minutes later. Ozuna said it appears the blaze started near the middle bedroom of the single-wide home she and Martinez moved into about a month ago after being separated. “We wanted to start over; well I guess this is completely starting over,” she said, fighting back tears. “I guess this is rock bottom.” Although the three occupants, a Chihuahua mix and pit bull got out of the home unharmed, they lost all of their possessions, including an 8-week-old pit bull puppy. “Everything we had, it’s all gone,” Ozuna said. “He (Martinez) likes tattoos. All of his tattoo stuff. Our money – we just got paid Friday. Our phones. Everything. Years of memories.” Firefighters from Bridgeport, Alvord and Decatur assisted.
