NEW BOUNDARIES – The Decatur School Board last night approved new elementary attendance boundaries to take effect with the opening of the district’s third elementary next fall. Generally, areas on the west side of the district are zoned into Rann Elementary, areas on the east side of the district are zoned into Carson Elementary and southern areas of the district including much of the downtown area of Decatur are zoned into Young Elementary. EDC UPDATES – United Rotorcraft and Wise Electric Co-op are nearing completion of a lease for the Co-op’s building at the Decatur airport that has been leased by Boots and Coots, the Decatur Economical Development Corp. board learned Thursday. EDC members also heard that a planned retail development at U.S. 380 and U.S 81/287 likely won’t be developed for 4-5 years, and the investment firm that owns the land will consider offers to sell it.

WATER QUALITY – The City of Decatur will change disinfection methods to free chlorine for the next 30 days beginning today. Normal disinfection methods will be reinstituted by Dec. 19. The change will not affect the quality of the drinking water, according to the city.

HOLIDAY STORE – Wise Regional Health System Auxiliary annual holiday store is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the Decatur Lions Club on State Street. Gifts, peanuts, pecans and baked goods will be for sale. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Cost is $5 and will include chili, cornbread, dessert and iced tea and coffee. Proceeds benefit the auxiliary in purchasing equipment for the hospital.

CHRISTMAS – Applications for Rhome’s Spirit of Christmas are due at city hall today.

DINNER – Zion Valley Cumberland Presbyterian, St. Mark Ascension and First Presbyterian Bridgeport churches will have a Thanksgiving share dinner Sunday following the 11 a.m. service at First Presbyterian. Guests are asked to bring a dish to share and food donations for WARM.

BARBECUE FOR CHARITY – Wise Electric is taking orders for Thanksgiving smoked briskets and hams. The briskets are $35, and the hams are $40. Proceeds from the sales will benefit Wise County charities. The deadline to order the smoked items is 5 p.m. today. They can be picked up by noon Wednesday, Nov. 25. REGISTER – Weatherford College Wise County staff will be available 9 a.m.-noon Saturday to register students for Spring 2010 classes. Information on payment options will also be available.

HOUSE FIRE – Five fire departments responded to a house fire in the 1400 block of Stevens Street in Bridgeport around 1:15 Wednesday afternoon. When the Bridgeport firefighters arrived, they found a room fully involved with fire coming out of the windows. “They were able to knock the fire down quickly and did a good job controlling the damage,” said Fire Marshal Marc Dodd. The homeowner, Rick Brown, was washing dishes when he discovered the fire. He exited the home unharmed, and Red Cross was called to the scene to assist with basic needs. Dodd said the fire was started by a space heater.

NEW ATTENDANCE ZONES – The Decatur School Board is expected to adopt new elementary school attendance boundaries at tonight’s meeting. The boundaries need to be redrawn to include the district’s third elementary, Young Elementary, under construction on County Road 4191. It is expected to open in August 2010. The attendance zone changes will affect students in grades Pre-K through five. The meeting is at 6 p.m. at the administration building.

OFF 380 – The Off 380 Players will present “Play On!” today through Sunday. RELAY KICK-OFF – The Wise County Relay for Life Kick-off is 5:30-7 tonight at Decatur Church of Christ. Anyone interested in being on a team or volunteering, or any team that wants to sign up, should attend.

POINSETTIA SALE – The Paradise Ag Supporters are selling poinsettias for $14. Orders will be taken through Nov. 24 and delivered between Nov. 30-Dec. 4. DEAN NAMED – Duane Durrett has been named dean of Weatherford College Wise County. Interim college president Kevin Eaton said Durrett has 33 years experience in administration at the Weatherford main campus and was vice president of student services for many years. “It’s a new position, and we want people to see how much we value this project,” said Eaton. “His experience will be vital to the success of the campus (in Wise County). We see this as being the flagship of our institutions.” Matt Joiner will continue as director, and he and Durrett will work together to establish the local campus.

TECHNOLOGY TALK – Despite the Nov. 3 defeat of the $7 million technology bond by voters in the Bridgeport school district, the school board intends to move forward with the goal of providing more computers for students. Superintendent Eddie Bland said at Monday’s school board meeting that the district originally looked at a one-to-one ratio for students in grades six through 12 and a one-to-two for kids in grades 5 and below. “But the demand for technology did not go away by not passing the bond. It will just be slower implementation … It will come out of existing revenues.”

BLOOD DRIVE – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 202 E. Thompson, will host a blood drive from 4 to 9 p.m. today.

BAKE SALE – The Wise County Messenger Thanksgiving bake sale to benefit United Way of Wise County is 9 a.m. today, 115 S. Trinity. Come early before the best goodies are gone.
