| ANIMAL SHELTER - Wise County will save $50,000 in construction costs on the new animal shelter by using its own staff to perform excavation and asphalt paving work. A Fort Worth-based contractor, meanwhile, will perform most of the work building the shelter for a cost of about $800,000. Ronald Hamm, vice president of Speed Fab-Crete, told Wise County Commissioner Kevin Burns in a letter last week that his firm can build the shelter for $843,385, and that estimate included the same proposed excavation and paving work. Commissioners decided Monday, however, that county staff can do the excavation and paving work on their own. The county would save $52,000 by using its own staff to do the work, said County Judge Bill McElhaney. |

| PARADISE ARRESTS - Two persons are in the Wise County jail on charges that they burglarized the agriculture building at Paradise High School - twice. They were arrested after officers saw two pickup trucks leaving the building shortly after midnight Tuesday. Sheriff David Walker said a chase ensued through the Paradise area. A 20-year-old woman was arrested in one of the trucks. While she was in custody, a 21-year-old man, also a suspect in the thefts, called her cell phone. The man was arrested by Fort Worth police and returned to Wise County. Walker said the thieves removed some metal from the outside of the building and the woman, who was small in stature, entered the building and opened the doors. Thieves took tools and lawn equipment and other items during the two burglaries. "After the first burglary, the school bought all new equipment and the thieves came back and got it." Officers recovered most of the stolen items, Walker said. |
