It's come down to this. After 39 games, Northwest is just one victory away from its first state championship in school history. Standing in their way is 33-5 Port Arthur Memorial, who beat Midlothian Thursday to earn a spot in the state final. The two schools will square off at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Alamodome for the right to be crowned the 5A state champion.

Freeman leads Northwest past Alamo Heights, into 5A title game

With a trip to the 5A state finals on the line Thursday night, Sammie Freeman came up big when it mattered most. On the biggest stage under the bright lights of the Alamodome, Freeman dominated the paint from the opening tip. The 6-foot-9 post finished with 13 points and 17 rebounds, leading the Texans to a 65-54 victory over Alamo Heights in the 5A semifinal.
