For the past four years, Taylor Butler and Elizabeth Culpepper helped guide Decatur girls cross country teams to Round Rock. Saturday, the two seniors made an impressive farewell tour around the Old Settlers Park course. Butler ran a 12:02 on the 3,200-meter course to finish 16th. Culpepper crossed the finish line in 12:33 for 35th. Behind the seniors, Decatur finished fifth in the 4A race with 167 points. Bandera won the state title with 73.

Boyd finishes eighth in 3A

Running for the first time in the state finals, Connor Richardson took a bold strategy. “My plan was to get out fast, so I didn’t get caught up in the mess,” explained the Boyd junior. The race plan kept Richardson in the top 20 throughout. He went on to finish 18th in the 3A boys race at the University Interscholastic League cross country championships at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Richardson finished the 5K in 16:43 and led Boyd to an eighth-place finish.

Embree finishes 36th, Ashmore 83rd in 4A race

As the last race of a steamy, warm afternoon, the 4A boys faced the toughest conditions on the Old Settlers Park course in Round Rock Saturday. Decatur sophomores Gabe Embree and Matthew Ashmore fought their way around the course to post strong finishes. Embree ran 17:09 to finish 36th. Ashmore garnered 83rd, running 17:46.

As a freshman running the 4A state championships, Bridgeport’s Marisol Fraga understandably felt some nerves before Saturday’s race. On the course, the nerves disappeared as Fraga held her own to finish 44th in the Class 4A race, running 12:41 on the 3,200-meter course at Round Rock’s Old Settlers Park.

Paradise sophomore Matthew Eisen tried to exercise some patience early in Saturday’s Class 3A final and found himself battling traffic. “It was very crowded. I started in my normal place and ended up behind like a hundred people,” Eisen explained. Eisen fought his way through the pack to finish 39th, running a 17:10 on the 5K course at Old Settlers Park at the University Interscholastic League cross country championships in Round Rock.

Making his debut in the state meet, Alvord’s Colton Parker finished 117th in the Class 2A race. Parker finished the 5K course at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock at the University Interscholastic League cross country championships in 19:19.
