Falling behind 49-41 inside the final two minutes, the Slidell Greyhounds’ season appeared to be slipping away. Then starting with a transition layup by Hunter Horner, the Greyhounds fought all the way back to take the lead with a pair of free throws from Slayton Pruett with 23 ticks left. Irving Universal Academy’s big man Jamal Gaines finally stomped out the Greyhounds’ comeback bid with his game-winning layup and-one in a 52-50 victory over Slidell in the Class A Region III quarterfinal at Boyd High School.

The Slidell Lady Hounds were one win away from a rematch with Dodd City in the Class A Region III regional final. The only thing standing in their way was Gorman — and a problematic 1-2-2 zone. Using their length and athleticism on the perimeter, the Lady Panthers jumped passing lanes all night, as Slidell failed to get into any rhythm offensively. Unable to crack Gorman’s defense, the Lady Hounds fell Friday night in the Class A Region III regional semifinal at Mansfield 43-29.
