Alvord’s Chelsey Steele set the early pace in the Class 2A 800 final and held own late to earn a spot on the medal stand Friday.
Steele ran a personal-best 2:17.06 to bring home the bronze medal at the University Interscholastic League’s track and field championships at Mike Myers Stadium.
“I thought I ran well,” Steele said. “I’ve worked and deserved [the medal].”
Brock’s Kamy Cole won the race in 2:15.67. Elkhart’s Amanda Ham took the silver medal in 2:16.71.
Steele took the lead before the break and held it for most of the race. She said that was her strategy.
“My goal was to set the pace and finish well,” Steele said.
She led the field across the 400 mark at 1:07. She stayed in front until the final 200 meters when Cole came around her. Ham then passed Steele in the final 100.
Steele was able to hold off Crawford’s Ann Marie Dunlap at the finish to get on the awards stand.
