Behind a shutout by freshman pitcher Harley Hooks last season, the Alvord Lady Bulldogs took down the Aubrey Lady Chaparrals 1-0 for a bi-district title.
Friday night with its own freshman pitcher Kaley Reding, Aubrey returned the favor with 6-0 victory in game one of the Class 2A bi-district series at Northwest Lady Texans Field.
The two teams will meet for game two at noon Saturday.
Reding limited Alvord to just three hits over seven innings, striking 15. She did not issue a walk, but hit a batter.
“She was great,” said Aubrey coach Shon Ranton.
Alvord managed just seven baserunners against Reding and never got a runner past second.
“She pitched well,” said Alvord coach Jenna Barthold. “She stepped up and didn’t play like a freshman.
“[Tomorrrow] we have to hit the ball and make adjustments; what we didn’t do tonight.”
Aubrey provided all the offense Reding needed in the second inning. After Hooks struck out the side in the first inning, Aubrey’s Amanda Nelson led off the second with a triple. Katelyn Heath followed her with an infield single.
Shelby Carrigan brought Nelson in with a ground out. Cadyrose Phillips knocked Heath in with a two-out single to right field.
Aubrey carried that 2-0 lead into the top of the seventh. The Lady Chaparrals scored four in their final at-bat with two out. Phillips drove in her second run of the game with a single to right. Reding brought in two with a double to left field.
Hooks took the loss allowing six runs on eight hits. She struck out 13, walked three and hit a batter.
